BMW 735iL Finally Fixed the Engine Vibrations... with Diesel Mounts!
Hello viewers, in this video I will explain how I fixed the vibrations in my 1992 BMW 735iL using an unusual solution. The fix was accomplished by installing engine mounts from a diesel BMW E34 5 series.
Not shown in the video is the grinding process on the locating dowel on the diesel engine mount. I used a dremel tool and a file to reduce the size of the dowel. Any tool could be used, as long as the dowel fits in the hole inside the subframe. The surface of the mount must be perfectly flat!
Thanks to Karl32 from the German 7 series forum for posting this solution!

Just watched this video again because I am going to replace the brake light switch in my 525 E34. Since I first got the car every time I press the brake pedal "Kein Bremslicht" signal appears but the brake lights are working. In the forums, I read that the brake light switch needs to be replaced. However, I am not sure if it will help, because it happens only when the headlights are on (low beam/high beam/parking lights). Some suggest to disconnect the headlight vertical movement controller, but they also work. I decided first to replace the brake light switch. Then will see.
Hello, very useful video! I will do it in the same way. Just one question? when I install the new one (after the rust repair) do I need to use any glue or silicon? I do not know how they installed it in the factory.
Hi, yes be sure to install new trims because the old ones will be bent. I think the trims were installed dry at the factory but I'm not certain. You could use a light spray to make the sliding easier, but I wouldn't use a thick grease. There are drain holes for water and they should stay clear.
@@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec Thank you for the prompt reply! I guess it should probably be painted after the installation, what will you advise?
@@jalalaliyev3325 Do you mean painting the trim? From the factory the trim stays black to match the lower skirt.
@@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec Yes, I mean trim, in my car, it is painted Fjordgrau Metallic (310) and the lower skirt is in the same color. I guess when I buy the trim it will be black, I cannot order it in Fjordgrau Metallic (310).
@@jalalaliyev3325 I believe the E32 never had painted lower trim. You must have a late model E34 then? 1994 or 1995? If you do have an E32 with painted lower trim, it was either a custom Individual car ($$$) or the car was repainted at some point.
Thanks
Hello, have you ever fixed surging idle, I changed everything... Fuel pump, injectors, idle valve, throttle position, valves adjusted, fuel pressure regulator, and more, it has become little bit better, but still little bit problem with surging idle...
Can you chow me were it’s the pump fuel relay
Hello, how are you? First of all, I have been following you for a long time. Your car is my biggest dream from Turkey. I have never seen such a clean car before. If you are considering selling this model, could you please contact me?
That ain't right. Servo cruise control? Start un plugging stuff or feel for heat and smell for burning. Looking helps too.
In australia and new zealand the ed xr6&8 falcon got the projector head lights too and no information on them what so ever the lights for these falcons are like 500 to 1000 dollars the bmw are a cheaper alternative hopefully
I absolutely love and learned a lot from your videos. I know it's not directly related to this video but I'm wondering if you're able to help or give some advise? I have a 1988 e32 730i and need to change the head gasket but I am struggling to get off the head bolts. Would you have any ideas on how I can remove them?

Hello and congrats for your videos! I am considering to replace the oil pan gasket on my e34 535i by myself, so pretty similar to the e32 I guess. Is it possible to remove the oil pan without removing the front subframe? I can't see it very well from the video
Hi i have bmw 1988 735i the radiator broke from the oil cooler and mix the coolant whit transmision fluid Now my car is on limb Mode what can i do.
What did you do with the rears? Thanks
Thank you sir for sharing all your knowledge around the SLS on the e 32. This has given me much confidence to tackle my SLS leak which I now believe is coming from the hose you removed.
Your comment really made me smile, because it's exactly why I created this channel in the first place. By sharing my experiences (good and bad!), E32 owners can see a job done in advance and decide for themselves if it is something they'd like to take on. I hope you succeed in repairing the leak on your SLS system! Good luck :)
Bro!! I believe there’s sort of modifying chart specs and issued long ago from BMW describing who to drill tiny thouinch holes both in valve body and reverse bearing case but ain’t quite sure is it for 4hp-24 or 4hp-22?
Yes you are right. On the 4hp22 there used to be a common fix for the A-clutch pack which was to install a teflon o-ring (instead of metal) as well as drilling a tiny hole for oil to escape. I don't know all the details but if you google "4hp22 teflon ring drill" you'll find some good threads that address this issue. I haven't done this fix on my 4hp22 myself.
Presumably the higher front ride is to give space to allow lowering during breaking when the weight shifts to the engine and they did this because the springs are relatively soft so as to improve overall ride quality. If they fitted harder springs, it would be at the expense of the ride quality. It is high obviously but the platform is still leval with the rears. They must have tried different springs but essentially moved the e9 and e12 set up over and updated it. If you look at e23 ride, they are also quite similar. I suspect at the time they couldn’t find a spring to allow a lower height with the travel needed and wanted the cars to ride more softly. Can you let us know how you have found ride quality as a result? What are the springs like on poor roads and undulating surfaces- does it feel like a compromise? Ive got some spare padding for the hood corners. Ive fitted mine and it looks 90 percent OEM. I really don’t like your foam idea. It’s also flammable so not great. Left me know i will post some over to Canada.
Thank you for sharing this
Hi! I'm glad you found it useful :)
I would not bother taking the switch out neatly. I wasted a lot of time trying to take it out neatly. Grab a pair of pliers and take it out. Save yourself a lot of grief.
We each have our ways of working, some are more gentle than others :D What counts is that the switch comes out and that the bracket does not get damaged.
Hello, everything is good with you? So do you know what was the problem? Mine does the same, when already engine temp is good it stars that smoke
Fog light washers are the best thing ever
These are a life saver
Thanks for the video, super healfull. By any change, do you know where I could find the part# for the two types of nuts used for the drive shaft?
Hi, glad you liked the video! If you go to realoem.com and browse the classic cars, then pick E32 and then your specific model, you will find a diagram with the driveshaft parts.
@@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec I appreciate it
Did you find the solution to this? Mine also makes this noise.
Hi, there is no solution for it, it's how the ZF 4HP22 transmission behaves. It only happens in the first two gears and then it goes away. I overhauled the valve body to try and cure it but it made no difference. Other viewers here commented that their cars also do the same thing.
Hello, thank you for this video, easy to understand. I have a question: when you shift the rear gear I noticed that the rear part of the car raised, it happened two times. Is it normal for E32? or does it happen because of the automatic gearbox?
Glad you liked the video! Yes the rear raising and lowering as drive or reverse is engaged is normal. From what I read online, it's related to the torque being transferred to the rear wheels as the driveline is engaged but the brakes are applied.
My E34 525i is equipped with automatic gearbox and I have the same rear-raising moment. So it should be normal then. I just asked you to make sure that it is not a failure of the rear axle. However, one of my friends has a Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W221) and in his car rear does not rise when he shifts the gear. I just wonder how Mercedes engineers managed it. I was going to install polyurethane silent blocks to somehow limit this rise. Then I thought that, in that case, the polyurethane silent block will not damp transferred torque, and what if this undamped torque damages the gearbox?! In the end, I decided to keep it as it was - with rising back
Thanks for the info, I have just recently replaced engine mounts with Lemforder on E34 535i, vibrations were a bit better, but I will definitely try this. Amazing channel, keep it up.
Thank you! I hope that you will manage to improve the vibrations even more on your E34.
Thanks bud ! Sorted my 1992 730i after watching your video 👍
I'm glad the video helped you, thanks for watching :)
Beautiful Car. Just picked one up and watching all of your videos.Thank you and hello from northern N.H.
Hello from Quebec! Thanks for watching. If you have any questions about your E32 feel free to post them in the comments section and I'll try to answer them.
Awesome videos Thank You !!!!!
Thanks!
Thanks for great Video. I don’t have air suspension nor an e32, but still learned a lot from your issues. I would have replaced the hoses. Given the time you spent on the work, I would worry of them failing. I don’t think that you can tell the condition of a hose from its flexibility. However, given that it was always garaged, they were probably still good. Beautiful auto.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video! You're probably right, replacing the hoses would have been a good idea. But it would have added more cost and delivery time. It's a gamble, because it's difficult to know the true condition of an old part. So far they are still OK though.
Thank you for this valuable information, I'm going to buy a bmw 735 i e32, so this will come in handy...

Hi there Hope you are well and thanks always for the passion and detail in your videos. * please help me. I have an E32 730i recently acquired with no gearbox/transmission. Do you know if the ZF5HP19 would fit in it. Am struggling to source the ZF4HP22 original one.* Thanks in advance for your advice 🙏
Sorry I don't know about the 730i and gearbox compatibility! Good luck with your search!
I remember when Sreten of M539Restorations did his on his E32 which he refers to as project Karlsruhe and I think he said that he had a tough time finding those spherical membrenes and they were not easy to come by. Did you have a tough time finding them in Canada?
I think the accumulator he replaced was the one that is also used for the brakes system. Only the early cars had that version, which explains the rarity of the parts. The "regular" LAD accumulators are still hard to find though. They are manufactured in batches and sell quickly. When I bought mine I had set an alert on eBay and jumped on them as soon as possible.
Yeah that's exactly what Sreten did as well. Those things are extremely difficult to find. @@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec
Well done! Thank you
Im not finding them for the e38 for a decent price is it possible to use a accumulator from a different model of BMW or even a Mercedes
Sorry I can't help you with that, I don't know the E38 platform. Go to realoem and look up the part number. Maybe there are other brands that sell it.
I highly doubt that, but do you know if these would work on E28? I have E28 535i 1988 with the M30 and I do have vibrations. I'm suspecting engine mounts and instead of going with stock/oem do you think going with diesel ones might be better?
This is a good question. I'm 99% sure these specific engine mounts wouldn't work on the E28 because the subframe design is different. There were diesel versions of the E28 like the 524d and 524td, but they used a different engine mount design. Your car has the angular engine mount, while the 524d has cylindrical mounts. I would go on mye28.com and ask around if people successfully used diesel mounts on the 535i. Your vibration issue could be related to something else, too.
@@ClassicBMWFanInQuebecI had a bad O2 sensor and now the vibrations are almost gone, but I'm trying to perfect things (as you do). I know the mounts and subframes are quite different which is quite a pity. Diesel engines have a lot more vibrations, it's part of how they work. The engine mounts you put on your car are quite more rigid, which is an amazing find, as it will make you engine rock solid. Thank you for the prompt reply, you are amazing! Keep up the good work!
So I like the lowering of the front.
I like it too!
Do you feel lockups on each gear? I've got 3.0v6 Citroen with 4hp20. On 2nd and 3rd gear I feel like slipping the torque converter and then lockup. Should be that so noticeable?
Hmm I can't say I feel the lockup, no. I only feel the gear shifts.
I have a 1990 bmw 735i It needs so much work!
My car needed a lot of work when I purchased it. But by attacking one task at a time, over many years, I managed to make it reliable. You can do it!
@@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec thanks !! I need that positive energy

Hi, sorry I can't help you with the replacement of the radio. I enjoy the stock radio and didn't work on it.
@@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec thankyou for replying. I like your videos. I also have a manual e24. Both cars are superior drives. My e32 has 90K on the clock and is pretty dependable. I take it on trips.
I have the same vibrating issue in my 1992 BMW 735i automatic. Just ordered the mounts, thank you!
I hope it has the same improvement on your car!
@@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec the vibrations at idle have significantly improved. So that’s a big win. But there are still vibrations when driving, especially around 2K. So I will be checking the center bearing of the driveshaft and might as well change the transmission mounts while at it all while referring to the videos you posted about those :) but thanks so much for sharing about these diesel engine mounts and for finding that German thread mentioning those. Would have never crossed my mind!
@@alexanderparakesyan1152 What a great success story! Thanks for sharing! The other mounts will probably refine the characteristics of the car even more. Every time I start my car now, I am still amazed that I don't feel the engine vibrating. It's a much more serene experience. Glad it worked for you.
@@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec thank you! Yeah it really shouldn’t have those vibrations. The worst was during a stop light with the foot on the brake and it would vibrate haha. That was annoying and so glad it’s resolved now!
That is a beautiful car.
You are awesome!! Helped me a lot 😊
